The E.D.E. certificate for directors of residential care homes for the elderly

The E.D.E. has made it its business to develop uniform European standards for the professional qualifications of directors of residential care homes. The association is fully aware that, due to the different structures in the social and educational area in Europe, a harmonisation of education can only be achieved on a long-term basis.

Nevertheless, the E.D.E. faces this comprehensive task. The growing number of old and very old people and the dynamic development of the health and care sector make it necessary to take into account the new qualification requirements arising from it and to adapt the requirements specification for managers and directors working in the long-term care.

For this reason, the E.D.E. has also defined in its statute the task to establish criteria for a uniform qualification for care home directors in Europe. In the nineties, in the course of conferences and symposia, the international working groups elaborated the principles and requirements and created the framework guidelines that were defined as the training standards for a uniform home director qualification approved in all European countries. All member associations have made it their task to ensure that their national training guidelines are adapted to these framework guidelines.

By determining the European guidelines for the vocational training and the continuing education of home directors, the E.D.E. has made it clear that a subject-specific training is absolutely required in view of the increasing professional and human demands placed on those who care and aid the elderly. A long-term aim is to complete the education of home managers and directors at the university-level. The E.D.E. accredits therefore increasingly scientific courses of academic training in the areas of care, health and social management.
